The Latridae are a family of fish belonging to the group of mongoose-like (Cirrhitioidei). The species of the family live in temperate seas in the southern hemisphere, and a few in the northern Pacific. They are fished by sport fishermen and commercially and are considered good food fish.

features

The fish are 20 centimeters ( Morwong ephippium ) to 1.8 meters ( Chirodactylus grandis ) long. The body is more or less oval to elongated and laterally flattened or approximately round in cross section. A swim bladder is available. The ends of the fin spines of the dorsal fin and the edges of the fin membranes do not carry cirrus. The ventral rays of the pelvic fins are thick and unbranched. The Latridae can also be distinguished from other tufted perch by a certain larval stage that only occurs in them. In this late larval stage, called 'paperfish', the larvae have a tall body with a powerful belly keel. This is seen as an adaptation to a pelagic way of life.

Genera and species

Dactylophora nigricans
Goniistius zebra
Mendosoma lineatum
Nemadactylus monodactylus

Until the end of 2018, the family consisted only of the two genera Latridopsis and Latris with 2 species each and Mendosoma lineatum , which was the only species of the genus Mendosoma until then . After an investigation of the phylogeny of the Cheilodactylidae and the Latridae, numerous other species were placed in the Latridae, which previously belonged to the Cheilodactylidae. Most of the new species were assigned to the revalidated genus Goniistius and previously belonged to Cheilodactylus . Evidence that the families Cheilodactylidae and Latridae are closely related and that the previous division did not lead to monophyletic families has existed since 2004.
