Under Tropentarn means a by the Bundeswehr used Tarnmotiv.

term

The term is mostly associated with desert camouflage . Technically abbreviated is Tropentarn 3 -color FT (Flecktarn) (sand-colored, brown, green).

The term tropical camo was also used earlier for lighter uniforms suitable for humid climates , which were used, for example, in Kosovo missions . The designation of uniforms for Kosovo and similar missions that have 5- color FT is appended with the note “tropics” ( e.g. field blouse FT tropics ). These are visually difficult to distinguish from the suits worn in Germany because they use the same camouflage pattern. However, they are made from different materials.

Motive and effect

The camouflage consists of small, rounded spots of different colors, similar to the 5-color FT. The base color is sandy brown with ocher brown and olive green spots.

The camouflage motif looks ideal on lightly overgrown sandy soil and dry steppes . Due to the high brightness value, it is also suitable for light forests and desert soil .

Another desert camo motif for the Bundeswehr is currently being worked on, which, in contrast to the tropical camo, consists of only two colors (sandy brown and ocher) and uses a digital pattern.

commitment

Tropical camouflage is used militarily only in the Bundeswehr. It is primarily used in the army and the air force in the Afghanistan operational area .

The tropical camouflage motif is also used for various items (trousers, wash bags, baseball caps, US jackets, etc.) for the military look in the civilian sector .

Processing of tropical equipment

Uniforms and equipment are made of a lighter, mostly air-permeable material, which is supposed to improve the air conditioning in warmer regions.

For example, tropical field blouses do not have a zipper and a ventilation grille is sewn into the armpit area. This reduces perspiration and accelerates the drying of damp clothes on the body.

Uniforms

In Germany , soldiers are prohibited from wearing a complete uniform in desert camouflage. Exceptions can, however, be made for illustrative purposes (“open day”), for training purposes or to prepare for deployment.

It is also permitted in the civil sector for sporting events.
