Tropheus polli is a species of African cichlid that is endemic to a small area on the central east coast of the East African Lake Tanganyika . The species was named after Max Poll , a Belgian ichthyologist .

features

male

Tropheus polli has a relatively elongated, laterally flattened body and is 14 to 16.5 cm long. Of all the cichlids of the genus Tropheus , T. polli is the largest. Males are gray-brown with a more or less clearly visible sky-blue or greenish tinge, depending on their mood, and show eight to nine pale horizontal stripes that disappear with age. Females are darker and their horizontal stripes are preserved even with old age. The fish's eyes have a showy light blue iris. The caudal fin is crescent-shaped and unpatterned.

Way of life

Tropheus polli only rarely lives between stones and rocks near the shore at depths of more than 6 or 7 meters and feeds on the growth. In contrast to most of the other cichlids in Lake Tanganyika, the fish are mouthbrooders .
