Prince's Congress in Troppau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Troppauer Fürstenkongress belongs to the series of monarchical congresses in the first third of the 19th century. It took place from October 20 to December 20, 1820 in Troppau, today's Opava . It was triggered by the revolutionary developments in Naples in July of that year.

Prince Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich invited participants from the five major European powers to deliberations on further political action. Monarchs, crown princes and diplomats from Austria , Russia and Prussia participated, while Great Britain and France were represented by envoys at the conference.

Tsar Alexander I and Emperor Franz I of Austria were personally present, while Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm represented Prussia. They were supported by their foreign ministers Ioannis Kapodistrias , Metternich and Karl August von Hardenberg .

Metternich tried, on the basis of the closed Holy Alliance , to commit the states to intervention in those countries that were in danger of subversion. In addition to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies , it involved interventions in Spain and Portugal , where, after the Napoleonic wars, republican ideas questioned the continued existence of the monarchies.

On November 19, the monarchs from Austria, Russia and Prussia signed a protocol that swore them to follow Metternich's line to intervene from outside in burgeoning revolutions and to suppress them in order to preserve the status quo of 1815. Britain protested against this agreement.

On December 20, the Congress ended without a precise agreement on intervention in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. However, an agreement was reached on a continuation of the congress in Ljubljana on January 26, 1821, where the details should finally be clarified.
