Trudy (Gorilla)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trudy (born presumably in June 1956 in West Africa ; died on July 24, 2019 in Little Rock , Arkansas , United States ) was a female Western lowland gorilla who had lived at the Little Rock Zoo in Little Rock , Arkansas , since 1988 . Together with the gorilla lady Fatou from the Berlin Zoological Garden , she was considered the gorilla with the highest documented age at the time of her death.

Life

Trudy was born in the wild. Her date of birth was estimated to be June 1956, but could not be determined with certainty. She was brought to the United States in 1957. After staying in zoos in St. Louis ( Missouri ) and Buffalo ( New York ), she was brought to the Little Rock Zoo in Little Rock in 1988 together with the male gorilla Ollie. The two were probably the first gorillas to be found in a zoo in the US state of Arkansas. Trudy did not give birth to any kittens during her time at the zoo. She lived in Little Rock in a group that otherwise only consisted of male gorillas. A zookeeper gave her for this reason the "Boss Lady" nickname ( German "boss").

Since the death of the gorilla lady Colo from a zoo in Columbus ( Ohio ) in January 2017, she has been considered the oldest living gorilla alongside Fatou from the Berlin Zoological Garden. Fatou's age can only be estimated, too, since, like Trudy, she was born in the wild. In addition, the two were considered to be the gorillas with the highest documented age. She died in July 2019 at the estimated age of 63. Most recently she lived in a smaller enclosure with the male gorilla Brutus.
