SRAM LLC [ sɹəˑm ] is a US company that manufactures and sells bicycle components . The company's headquarters are in Chicago . The name "SRAM" is an acronym made up of the names of the company's founders S cott King, Stan R ay Day and S am Patterson. The European branch is in Schweinfurt ( Germany ), the Asian branch in Taichung ( Taiwan ).

history

SRAM was founded in 1987 in Chicago. SRAM became famous for its grip shift handles. These were developed in the late 1980s for racing bikes and triathlon bikes and gained great popularity on mountain bikes from the early 1990s . In the mid-1990s, the company began to expand its range through its own developments and brand acquisitions. The first additional products were ESP rear derailleurs, which were first presented in 1996. Under the abbreviation ESP, SRAM includes a gear ratio of 1: 1 instead of 1: 2 in the rear derailleur , so that it moves as far as the cable.

In 1997 SRAM took over the bicycle division of the German company Sachs , which had been building gear hubs since 1907 . The SRAM circuit hubs were manufactured in Schweinfurt . For this purpose, SRAM built a new factory with a development center in 1999 in the Maintal industrial and commercial park with funding amounting to millions. The hubs were completely manufactured in Schweinfurt, with the majority of the individual parts being produced in-house or bought in from Germany and other European countries.

In 2002 the suspension fork and damper manufacturer RockShox was taken over, and in 2004 the brake manufacturer Avid was taken over. With the acquisition of Truvativ in 2005, SRAM was able to expand its portfolio in the areas of bottom brackets, cranks, handlebars, stems and pedals for mountain bikes. In 2007, the product range in the racing bike sector was greatly expanded and rounded off by the American wheel manufacturer Zipp.

In 2006, SRAM offered road bike components for the first time with the SRAM Force and SRAM Rival. This makes SRAM the third provider of road bike component groups alongside Shimano and Campagnolo . The number of employees rose to 2000. In 2011, the American manufacturer of power meters "Quarq" was taken over.

SRAM makes its components compatible with each other. With its brands, the company produces components for almost all types of bicycles. Production takes place at several locations worldwide, mainly in China and Taiwan, where SRAM has its own production facility. The Schweinfurt location will continue as a development center for all SRAM shifting systems, as a European marketing location and for customer service for dealers. The current workforce is more than 160 employees.

On May 1st, 2017, SRAM stopped the entire gear hub production.
