Zalendzhikha ( Georgian წალენჯიხა ) is a city in the Samegrelo-Semo Svaneti region in western Georgia . It is the seat of the municipality of the same name .
It is about 220 m above sea level on the Tschaniszqali river and has 3847 inhabitants (as of 2014). The sharp decrease compared to the previous census (8956 inhabitants in 2002) is partly explained by an administrative redesign: The five surrounding villages Chwiteri-Sakalandio ( ხვითერი-საკალანდიო ), Kweda Masandara ( ქვედა მაზანდარა ), Lughera-Samzazchwi ( ლუღერა-სამცაცხვი ), Seda Masandara ( ზედა მაზანდარა ) and Sghwaia ( ზღვაია ) with a total of 2541 inhabitants (2014) still belong to the territorial organ Zalendschicha (Georgian წალენჯიხის ტერიტორიული ორგანო , Zalendschichis teritoriuli organo ) - a community-like structure subordinate to the municipality, but no longer to the actual city .
The name of the city goes back to the people "Zani", who are said to have lived in the area. According to various historical sources, this area was already inhabited in the Stone Age. Zalendzhikha has had town charter since 1964.
Not far from tsalenjikha located at Jvari the Inguri Dam with the largest hydroelectric power plant of the Caucasus . It is also the highest arch dam on earth.
