Český statistický úřad (ČSÚ; German  Czech Statistical Office ) is the statistical service of the Czech Republic .

history

Statistics in Bohemia began with Maria Theresa's administrative reform . In 1754 she carried out the first census in the Bohemian lands . In 1787, Josef Anton von Riegger published the "Materials on Old and New Statistics of Bohemia", supported by Emperor Joseph II . In 1864 the Comité for the scientific research into the country of Bohemia was founded. The first modern census took place in Austria in 1870, and the State Statistics Office of the Kingdom of Bohemia ( Zemský statistický úřad Království českého ) was founded on March 6, 1897, the head of which, Karl Kořistka, carried out a comprehensive topographical survey of the country. In 1909 the first statistical handbook was published with a wealth of data on the geography, population, industry, agriculture, finance and administration of the country.

In 1919 the State Statistical Office ( Státní úřad statistický ) was established in Czechoslovakia. It acquired the first tabulating machines from the Powers Accounting Machine Company in 1920 . The chairmen of the statistical office from 1919 to 1941 were Dobroslav Krejčí, František Weyr , Jan Auerhan and Antonín Boháč. Auerhan was shot by the Gestapo in 1942 .

After the communist revolution in February 1948, the statistical office dealt with the fulfillment of the five-year plans . The fall of the regime through the Velvet Revolution in 1989 made impartial statistics possible again. The Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) was founded with the partition of Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993 as the successor organization to the State Statistical Office. After the space in Prague's Karlin in 2002 floods were seriously damaged, the ČSÚ in 2004 moved to a new building in the 10th district .
