František Weyr

František Weyr (born April 25, 1879 in Vienna , † June 29, 1951 in Brno ) was a Czechoslovak sociologist , philosopher and legal scholar ; he was one of the co-founders of the Faculty of Law at Masaryk University in Brno, of which he was rector for several years. He was the most important exponent of the Brno normativistic legal theory. Weyr was also a member of the Czechoslovak National Assembly.

Life

After attending grammar schools in Vienna and Prague (Abitur 1899) he studied law at the Charles University in Prague, he finished his studies in 1904 (JUDr. 1908). He then worked as a statistician in the statistical office, where he was involved in extensive empirical sociological studies. In 1918 František Weyr was elected to the National Assembly for the National Democratic Party ( Československá národní demokracie ) and participated in the drafting of the new constitution. Weyr was a member of the National Assembly until 1920. From 1920 to 1929 he headed the State Statistics Office of Czechoslovakia . From 1921 he lectured at Masaryk University, where he was elected twice as dean and once as rector.

During the time of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia , Weyr was “under the supervision” of the Protectorate authorities. After 1945 he returned to the faculty, but had to leave it for political reasons after the communist seizure of power in 1948.

František Weyr as a sociologist

Weyr's academic interests included legal philosophy , constitutional and administrative law , international law and, in some cases, statistics . He dealt with sociological methodology and published his theories in 1927 in O metodě sociologické (On the method of sociology), which was widely discussed. He worked closely with Karel Engliš .

František Weyr was a member of a number of scientific societies, including the International Statistical Institute (in The Hague ), Comité International d'Histoire Constitutionelle (in Paris), Československá statistická společnost (ČStS, Czechoslovak Statistical Society), the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences , etc.
