The Tschetwerikow MDR-6 ( Russian Четвериков МДР-6 , NATO code name : Mug ), also known as the Che-2 (Че-2), was a three-seat Soviet flying boat . The abbreviation MDR provides information about the intended use: Morskoi Dalni Raswedtschik (Морской Дальний Разведчик) stands for naval long-range reconnaissance.

development

Project planning began in 1936 and in the summer of 1937 the prototype powered by two M-25E star engines was completed. Its first flight took place in December of the same year. In 1939, production of the MDR-6A series with M-63 engines began at Plant 31 in Taganrog , which ran until 1941 and, minus the prototypes, comprised 25 machines. The machine prevailed against the Beriev MDR-5 . Igor Cheetwerikov then made some improvements to the model. He changed the floor of the hull and made the two support floats retractable. The bow was changed, eliminating the machine gun stand, and the tail unit now consisted of two rudder units on the Y-shaped elevator.

Five prototypes of this version, designated as MDR-6B , existed, which were equipped with in- line engines M-105 , WK-105PF and WK-107A . One received retractable support floats. They were tried out between 1941 and 1945. A series production did not take place because the aircraft did not meet the requirements of the Soviet Navy despite more powerful engines.

The MDR-6 was in service until the mid-1950s and was then replaced by the Beriev Be-6 .

construction

The MDR-6 was a cantilevered full- metal shoulder- decker, the keeled hull had two boat steps . The trapezoidal wing had a "seagull kink" upwards to protect the engines from splashing water as far as possible and was provided with two rigid support floats, which were also keeled. The tail unit was of normal construction, with the horizontal stabilizer having V-bracing.
