The Berijew MDR-5 ( Russian Бериев МДР-5 , also Berijew MS-5 , МС-5) is a twin-engine airplane boat in Hochdecker -design the Soviet manufacturer Berijew . The first flight took place in May 1938 .

development

The motors, which each drove a WISch-3 metal propeller, were located on the leading edge of the wing under NACA hoods . Support floats were installed under the wing. The wing itself was attached to the fuselage with struts. The machine and the wing were made of metal, only a flap and rudder were covered with fabric.

The deployment should take place as an armed long-range sea reconnaissance. The armament consisted of three SchKAS machine guns caliber 7.62 mm. Furthermore, a total of 1000 kg of drop armament could be carried.

Two machines were built in 1938, a second as an amphibious aircraft . During the tests, the machine turned out to be unseaworthy. The landing gear was removed again and the bow of the fuselage was lengthened about 30 cm.

The flight performance was good, but the range for a maritime patrol was insufficient. The reason was the high curb weight of the machine. Instead, the Tschetwerikow MDR-6 was put into series production.

The machines were used for transport purposes until 1943.
