history

In 1883 Otto Herwig from Hanau am Main visited Arosa because of a lung disease, convinced of the healing properties of the Arosa mountain air. A short time later he founded the "Sanatorium Berghilf" for people with lung disease who stayed there mainly during the summer months. In 1892 his sister took over the house and ran it until her death in 1922. In 1929 the sanatorium became the Tschuggen Grand Hotel for winter sports enthusiasts; this change was typical for the entire development of tourism in Arosa.

In 1966 a major fire destroyed the property. The reconstruction took four years. The reopening was celebrated in autumn 1970. Armin Wyssmann, the long-time owner and director of the hotel, sold the Tschuggen Grand Hotel in 1980 to Karl-Heinz Kipp (1924-2017). The hotel is still owned by the family to this day.

In 2004, the Tschuggen Bergoase was built under the direction of the architect Mario Botta and interior designer Carlo Rampazzi . The hotel's own mountain railway, the Tschuggen Express , was also opened.
