Tumipampa (also: Tomebamba, Tumibamba ) was a village of the Kañari , later a city of the Incas in today's Ecuadorian province of Azuay . Today the city of Cuenca stands on its ruins .
The original name of the place before the Inca invasion was Guapondelig . There, around 1480, the Kañaris army was defeated by the army of the Inca ruler Tupaq Yupanki , so that the Kañaris area could be annexed to the Inca Empire. In place of the destroyed town of Guapondelig, conveniently located on the Qusqu - Kashamarka - Kitu traffic axis , the Incas built the city of Tumipampa as a religious and cultural center. The city was probably destroyed during the War of Succession between Waskar and Atawallpa in 1532 .
In 1547 the first Spanish chroniclers saw the ruins of Tumipampa, and in 1557 the Spaniard Gil Ramírez Davalos founded the city of Cuenca on its ruins, named after the birth town of the Viceroy of Peru Andrés Hurtado de Mendoza , Cuenca in Spain .
In 1925 , Dr. Max Uhle , a German archaeologist, was building the foundation walls of the Inca city gate Pumapunku ("Lion Gate") and the Wiraqucha temple. On the foundations of Pumapunku there is now a museum of the Ecuadorian central bank.
