The Perschling tunnel chain is a rail transport project in Lower Austria and part of the new Western Railway from Vienna to St. Pölten and is therefore part of TEN project No. 17 Paris – Budapest .

The new line Vienna - St. Pölten is divided, starting from the Lainzer Tunnel, into the sections Wienerwald , Tullnerfeld and the western section, which is bounded in the west by the Wagram junction.

In total, the chain of tunnels in the western section consists of three tunnels:

  1. Reiserberg Tunnel (length 1370 m)
  2. Stierschweiffeld tunnel (length 3293 m)
  3. Raingrubentunnel (length 2775 m)

construction

The construction phase began in 2003. From December 2005 to the tunnels with tunnel boring machines of the company Herrenknecht built. The drive for the Stierschweiffeld tunnel was completed on April 20, 2007, for the Reiserberg tunnel on February 25, 2008 and for the Raingrubentunnel on March 19, 2009. The slab track (in the tunnel) and the ballasted track (open-air section) were built by the beginning of 2012 Installation of extinguishing water pipes and completion of the emergency exits, installation of the contact line , ETCS balises and signals . This was followed by test drives and acceptance tests before the new Vienna - St. Pölten line was put into operation on December 9, 2012. For the time being, a maximum of 230 km / h (by Railjet and ICE-T ) is reached, although the route has been approved for 250 km / h. The construction costs amounted to around 107.4 million euros.
