Turíbio Soares Santos (born March 7, 1943 in São Luís do Maranhão ) is a Brazilian guitarist .

Life

Santos was born in São Luís do Maranhão in 1943 , and the family moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1946 . Santos grew up in a musical family with parents, grandparents, three siblings and two half-sisters. At the age of 12 he received his first guitar lessons from his mother and the teachers of his sisters.

In 1958 he took part in a lecture by Heitor Villa-Lobos , and later processed the notes into the book "Villa-Lobos and the Guitar". In 1961 Villa-Lobos' widow Arminda invited him to record the Douze études for guitar. In November 1962 he also played the world premiere of Villa-Lobos' Sexteto Místico in Rio de Janeiro.

In 1962, Santos began studying architecture in Rio de Janeiro, but at the same time began his concert career with a performance in his native São Luís do Maranhão. Further concert appearances, recordings and prizes at competitions followed, so that in 1963 he gave up studying architecture. In 1965 he won the first prize of the Concours International de Guitare of the French radio and settled in Paris, where he was then taught by Julian Bream and Andrés Segovia . In the next few years he went on concert tours from Paris (in the summer to Brazil, among other places) and recordings, and his two children were born in Paris. He also completed numerous arrangements of works by Brazilian and French composers for the Max Eschig publishing house in Paris.

In 1974 Santos moved back to Rio de Janeiro and continued on extensive concert tours until 1980. From 1980 he began building guitar classes, including at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, and in 1982 founded the Orquestra de Guitarras do Rio de Janeiro . In mid-1986 he took over the management of the Museu Villa-Lobos.

Santos has received numerous awards, including Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur .
