Gaspar Sanz (actually Francisco Bartolomé Sanz y Celma ; baptized April 4, 1640 in Calanda / Kingdom of Aragón , † 1710 in Madrid ) was a Spanish composer and guitarist of the Baroque .

Life and effect

Born to an old and respected family near Saragossa (his father was Bartolomé Sanz, his mother Francisca Celma), Sanz studied theology and philosophy at the University of Salamanca , where he obtained the degree of Baccalaureus in theology and the licenciado in Philosophy received. He learned composition and guitar with Cristofaro Caresana in Naples , where he worked as organist for Philip IV at the royal court , and in Rome , where Pietro Andrea Ziani (organist in the Republic of Venice ) and Lelio Colista were also trained at that time. Sanz studied among other things the guitar works of Giovanni Paolo Foscarini and Francesco Corbetta .

On his return to Spain, “Don Gaspar Francisco Bartolome Sanz, y Celma” published the first important textbook for the five-course baroque guitar on December 6, 1674 in Saragossa , the two-volume “Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española y métodos de sus primeros rudimentos hasta tañer con destreza” “, Which he added twice later. The work teaches music theory and playing techniques and contains around 90 arrangements of Spanish dances (such as the Españoleta in three- four time, which is linked to a specific three-part harmony scheme, or the Rujero in straight time, which is built on a harmonic bass foundation ) and Italian melodies.

In 1954, at the suggestion of guitarist Andrés Segovia , the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo wrote the subsequently very successful “Fantasia para un gentilhombre” for guitar and orchestra on topics by Sanz, which Sanz intended for his student Juan José de Austria , whom he also had the first two Had composed volumes of his guitar school, an illegitimate son of Philip IV and half-brother of King Carlos II , the addressee of the dedication of his third volume of the work Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española [...] .
