The Turon River is a river in the middle of the Australian state of New South Wales . Gold was found on its banks in 1851.

course

The Turon River, which is home to many trout , forms north of Portland from Jews Creek and Coolamigal Creek . It flows through Sofala and flows into the Macquarie River , a tributary of the Barwon River and thus the Darling River . At its upper reaches it flows through the Turon National Park .

Gold rush

One of the first gold rushes in Australia took place on the Turon River . The Chinese prospectors , who needed water to wash out the gold, built channels along the river for gold panning , some of which can still be seen today. At that time there were already the first aversions to the Chinese in the gold fields. The reasons were competition and latent racism.

The prospectors had to pay 30 shillings. The claims were only 12.5 m² in size. Therefore, the work was extremely arduous. The Governor while Fitzroy reduced the sum, but was raised as the license fee, there is resistance built up: The gold rush is not paid. The police then fined £ 5 those who did not pay; the penalty doubled for each further default. The police became more and more hated. She was labeled the Diggers Hunts and arguments broke out.

Today there is a recreation area in the gold rush region, where gold mining, canoeing, fishing and horse riding can be practiced.
