Twents

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Twents is a dialect of Lower Saxony and is spoken by the inhabitants of the Twente region in the Dutch province of Overijssel . In addition to Limburgish and Frisian, Lower Saxony is officially recognized in the Netherlands as part of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages . Twents is spoken everywhere in Twente, due to the dialect continuum there are some differences in the region or from place to place, both in pronunciation and in vocabulary. In its vocabulary , Twents has many loan words from Dutchand it is written according to the practices of Dutch orthography, because the unregulated writing language in the region was earlier more Middle Dutch (area of the Netherlands) than Middle Low German . Therefore, texts written in the Westphalian town of Twents differ noticeably from the texts of the Westphalian or Lower Saxon dialects in northwestern Germany, but not in pronunciation.

The Van Deinse Institute in Enschede , which has been part of the TwentseWelle Museum since 2006 , deals with culture in the Twente region, folklore, cultural history and, above all, the regional language.
