Tyke (elephant)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tyke (* 1974 - August 20, 1994 in Honolulu ) was an African elephant circus from the Circus International of Honolulu, Hawaii , who killed her trainer during a performance on August 20, 1994 and then fled the arena. She walked the streets for more than 30 minutes until police fired 86 shots at the animal, which eventually collapsed and died from the wounds. The attack in the arena was videotaped. Additional footage shows an attack on a person outside the building.

background

According to data from PETA , the August 1994 attack had already been preceded by three incidents in which Tyke was involved.

21-22 April 1993

On April 21, 1993, Tyke escaped through the main doors of the Jaffa Shrine Center in Altoona , Pennsylvania , during a performance , where she was at large for an hour. Their outbreak caused more than $ 14,000 in damage. According to an affidavit given by a circus worker to the USDA the following day , Tyke also attacked a tiger tamer while the circus was in Altoona.

July 23, 1993

On July 23, 1993, "[Tyke] ran amok at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot , North Dakota , trampling, injuring and frightening the crowd as they walked uncontrollably for 25 minutes." From documents from USDA and Canadian warrants indicate that a Hawthorn elephant named Tyke was mistreated by a guardian during a performance at Tarzan Zerbini Cirkus. “The elephant handler was seen beating the one-tusked African elephant in public to the point where the elephant screamed and stooped on three legs to avoid the beating. Also when the carer passed the elephant afterwards, the elephant yelled and backed away, which showed strong fear of the presence [of the carer]. "

Damage

On August 20, 1994, Tyke was involved in a serious incident that resulted in the death of her coach and the serious injury of another man. During a performance in Honolulu, Hawaii, she became enraged and attacked her keeper in front of a large crowd. Tyke then killed her trainer, Allen Campbell, who was trying to save the orderly from the attack. Then she stormed out of the arena and onto the streets. She also attacked a man who tried to stop her escape at a gate. After a half-hour hunt for the animal, local law enforcement officers fired 86 shots at the 3600 kg animal. Tyke eventually succumbed to her wounds and died.

consequences

As a result of the attack in Hawaii on August 20, 1994, Tyke became a symbol of circus tragedies and a symbol of animal rights. Lawsuits were also filed against the City of Honolulu, the State of Hawaii, the circus and Tykes owner, John Cuneo, Jr., and his Hawthorn Corp. Honolulu attorney William Fenton Sink indicted Cuneo on behalf of several co-plaintiffs, including children, who sustained mental harm while witnessing Tyke's killing. While the lawsuits were being negotiated in court, the amount of the fines was hidden from the public. In honor of Sink's work in the Tyke case, Animal Rights Hawaii renamed its Order of the Innocent Award to the William Fenton Sink Award for Defense of Animals.

Allen Campbell's autopsy revealed that he was under the influence of cocaine and alcohol at the time of death . Denver Zoo authorities confirmed that there had been complaints of animal abuse against Campbell as early as the late 1980s when he ran an elephant and camel ride in the city.

The Tyke incident inspired legislation at the local level in Hawaii and abroad, while California Congressman Sam Farr tabled a bill in the House of Representatives in 1999 and renewed it in 2012.
