Tylecodon buchholzianus is a species of the genus Tylecodon in the family of thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae).

description

Tylecodon buchholzianus grows as a branched, succulent dwarf shrub and is up to 30 centimeters high. The upright to spreading or, growing in locations on overhanging rocks, hanging plants are sometimes leafless for a long time, but still photosynthetically active. The spread out and irregular branches are up to 27 centimeters wide. The gray-green, brittle and smooth shoots reach a diameter of up to 20 millimeters at the base and then taper to 3 to 5 millimeters. The gray-green bark is covered with small, pitted and 1 to 2 millimeter wide leaf scars. On older shoots, the bark peels off in brown flakes. The short-lived leaves are crowded and are arranged from ascending to spread out. They are linear-stem-round to obovate and are 5 to 40 millimeters long and 3 to 5 millimeters wide. There are brakteenartige formed pfriemliche sheets, which are reddish and can be up to 1 mm long.

Flower detail

The inflorescence is formed by upright, almost sessile thyrses that are up to 2 centimeters long. These are composed of 1 to 3 monochasias , which in turn end in 1 to 3 upright individual flowers. The tubular corolla is purple to red-purple in color and is 10 to 15 millimeters long and up to 4 millimeters in diameter. The extended and later bent back tips are hairy on the inside.

Systematics and distribution

Tylecodon buchholzianus is distributed in the south of Namibia and in the South African province of Northern Cape . It was first described in 1937 by Schuldt & Stephan as Cotyledon buchholziana . Helmut Richard Tölken placed the species in the genus Tylecodon in 1978 .

There are two subspecies:

  • Tylecodon buchholzianus subsp. buchholzianus
  • Tylecodon buchholzianus subsp. fasciculatus G. Will. ; in winter with greenish shoots, leaves are not formed or only 1 to 2 per shoot, the shoots are very brittle and not persistent
