Tylecodon grandiflorus is a species of the genus Tylecodon in the family of thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae).

description

Tylecodon grandiflorus grows flat and as a sparsely branched succulent plant. The round and blunt shoots creep with an erect end and are covered with 2 millimeter high phyllopodia, which can also be absent. The gray to yellowish bark peels off. The compressed standing and ascending leaves are 6 to 14 inches long and 0.6 to 1.5 inches wide. The bald leaf blade is linear-elliptical to linearly inverted lanceolate. The top is furrowed to rutted, the bottom is convex. The blade tapers towards the base of the leaf, the tip of the leaf is blunt.

Single flowers and inflorescence

The inflorescences form thyrses up to 60 centimeters high with 1 to 5 monochasias . The inflorescence stalk is up to 50 centimeters high and has a diameter of 4 millimeters at its base. The linear bracts are 10 to 12 millimeters long. The spread, rising single flowers appear on a 3.5 to 4 centimeter long peduncle. The 7 millimeter long and 2 millimeter wide sepals are linear-triangular in shape and covered with glandular hairs. The curved-tubular and orange-red colored corolla tube is slightly enlarged towards the throat and is 3 to 4 centimeters long. It is provided with glandular hair. The species has the largest flowers within the genus.

Systematics and distribution

Tylecodon grandiflorus is distributed in South Africa in the provinces of North Cape and Western Cape in Strandveld , Renosterveld and in the Succulent Karoo . It was first described in 1768 by Nicolaas Laurens Burman as cotyledon grandiflora . Helmut Richard Tölken placed the species in the genus Tylecodon in 1978 .

Synonyms are Cotyledon tuberculosa Lam. and Cotyledon curviflora Sims .
