Tylecodon racemosus is a species of the genus Tylecodon in the family of the thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae).

description

Tylecodon racemosus grows as an upright and little branched shrub and is 20 to 50 centimeters high. The main trunk reaches a height of 7 centimeters and a diameter of 4.5 centimeters. The green shoots have a yellow-brown to gray bark, which peels off horizontally. Younger shoots are 8 millimeters in diameter. The soft succulent leaves grow ascending to spread out and crowded at the tips of the shoots. They can be covered with glandular hair, bald or covered with shiny and translucent warts. Reddish streaks are sometimes formed at the base of the leaf. They are linear-lanceolate, linearly inverted lanceolate to spatulate and are 2.5 to 10 centimeters long and 0.8 to 3.7 centimeters wide. The leaf base is flat to furrowed to broadly rutted on the upper side. The leaves wilt towards summer, but remain on the trunk and later leave a clear, white, horizontal scar.

The inflorescence is formed by upright thyrsen with 3 to 6 spread monochasia and 8 to 10 centimeters high. The studded with glandular hairs or bare inflorescence stalks are 3 to 4 millimeters in diameter at the base and taper towards the top. The linear-lanceolate bracts become smaller from bottom to top and soon fall off. The single flowers are spread out to ascend. The flower stalk is 8 to 17 millimeters long. The linear-lanceolate sepals are 9 to 10 millimeters long and 1 to 2.5 millimeters wide. The tubular corolla widens towards the throat and is 10 to 15 millimeters long and up to 4 millimeters in diameter. It is pink or white with dark pink to purple stripes and lightly covered with glandular hair. The outstretched tips are often later bent back.

Systematics and distribution

Tylecodon racemosus is widespread in southern Namibia and South Africa , in the succulent Karoo . The first description was in 1862 as Cotyledon racemosa by William Henry Harvey . 1978 Helmut Richard Tölken put the species in the genus Tylecodon . A synonym for the species is Cotyledon chloroleuca Dinter ex Friedrich .
