The two ships of the Elfriede type were the first new builds of motorized freighters by the Kiel Howaldtswerke after the end of the Second World War.

history

The series was ordered in 1950 by the shipping company Nordische Schiffahrts-Gesellschaft in Kiel and built in two units. The ships were initially used mainly in the Great Lakes and later in the West African service.

In the early 1960s, the ships were sold and continued to operate until around the early 1990s.

Later the Howaldtswerke built two ships, the construction of which was based heavily on the two units of the Nordic Shipping Company. These were the two slightly larger full-deckers with a tween deck and somewhat more fashionable superstructures Adriana (construction number 977, delivery June 10, 1953) and Luciana (construction number 978, delivery June 22, 1953). They were ordered by the shipping company AH Schwedersky Descendants, which was based in the same office building in Kiel as the Nordic Shipping Company.

The ships were shelter deckers with a deckhouse aft . However, they could also be operated as a full-decker , which allowed a deadweight of 2090 tons at a draft of 4.85 meters instead of 1680 tons at a draft of 4.30 meters. The two holds with a grain volume of 3,158.5 m 3 each had an intermediate deck . The hatch sizes were either four by 9.00 meters in length by 6.00 meters in width or, with the herften removed, two by 18.60 meters in length by 6.00 meters in width. The cargo holds had a largely undeveloped shape with little undercutting . In addition, the ships had a level tank ceiling due to the continuous double floor . Wooden hatch covers with tarpaulin were used. During construction, the ships received six loading booms with a load capacity of three tons each, two loading booms with a loading capacity of six tons each and one loading boom with a load capacity of ten tons.

The ships of the series were propelled by six-cylinder diesel engines from various manufacturers that operated on a fixed propeller. The Elfriede received a Krupp four-stroke type SIII ba, the Annemarie a Henschel two-stroke type 6 H 2235.
