St. Joseph (Czech Svatý Josef) is a Catholic church in the Moravian town of Svitavy (German: Zwittau) in the Czech Republic , which was built in 1894/96. The church in the suburb of Lány (German: Vierzighuben) is a protected architectural monument .

history

The first house of the Redemptorist Order in Moravia was founded in 1855 in Ketzelsdorf, now part of Vítězná . After the monastery and church in Vierzighuben had been completed, the seat was moved there in 1896. In 1946 the German members of the congregation had to leave the monastery and in 1950 the monastery was closed by the state. St. Joseph's Church became a parish church and the monastery building was used as a hospital.

architecture

The St. Joseph's Church (Kostel svatého Josefa) is a neo - Romanesque three-aisled basilica , which was built according to the plans of Josef Schmalzhofer from Vienna . The builder Wenzel Ryschawy from Zwittau led the construction. The brick church has two towers and is called “Červený kostel” / “Red Church” because of the red brickwork. On September 23, 1894 was groundbreaking ceremony held on September 8 and 1896, the church was the Olomouc Archbishop Theodor Kohn consecrated .
