Tyrimnus leucographus is the only plant species of the genus Tyrimnus in the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).
features
Tyrimnus leucographus is an annual stem therophyte that reaches heights of 20 to 200 centimeters. The leaves are pinnate, white-veined, long descending and toothed with thorns. The cups are arranged individually on long, leafless stems and have a diameter of 15 to 25 millimeters. The flowers are usually purple-pink in color, less often white. The fruits are about 4 millimeters in size, compressed, glabrous and black-red. The pappus consists of numerous rows of white hair and is 12 millimeters tall.
The flowering period extends from May to July.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.
Occurrence
Tyrimnus leucographus occurs in the Mediterranean area. The distribution area extends from Spain and France to Italy, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica, Libya, the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria, Turkey, the Aegean Sea, Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus. The species grows on fallow land, open and sandy or stony ruderal sites and in river beds. In Crete it can be found at altitudes from 0 to 750 meters.
