The Tyrol Tower was a construction project in the Tyrolean Lower Inn Valley near Wörgl . The building, planned as the tallest tower in Tyrol, was developed in 2006 by entrepreneur Alois Wegscheider and the architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill .
The Tyrol Tower Wörgl was planned as a 137 m high glass tower that would have housed a hotel, a casino, several restaurants and some offices. The tower would have been the tallest structure in the country. It should also offer around 600 jobs.
The building was planned by the renowned American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and was to be built by Roadpark Verwaltungs GmbH. The Tyrol Tower was planned in the middle of a roundabout at the Wörgl-Ost motorway exit, which was to be built as part of the Wörgl northern bypass. It was designed on an oval floor plan in order to offer the strong winds in the Tyrolean Lower Inn Valley as little attack surface as possible.
When the project was presented in October 2006, they wanted to build a large outlet center next to the tower . There were disputes about this, as according to the Tyrolean Regional Planning Act (TROG) it is not allowed to erect such a building on previously undeveloped grassland. After unsuccessful talks with the Tyrolean provincial government to change the law, Alois Wegscheider decided to only build the tower (the construction of which was permitted) without the outlet center.
On January 27, 2010, Wegscheider officially announced the premature end of the project at a press conference. The main reasons given were the growing skepticism of the population and the lack of support from state politics.
