Henry Settegast (born October 12, 1853 in Ragnit , East Prussia , † December 4, 1901 in Jena ) was a German crop scientist.

Life

Henry Settegast, a nephew of Hermann Settegast , studied agriculture at the University of Leipzig and received his doctorate there in 1879 with a dissertation on the relationship between animal breeding and agriculture on farms. He then worked in agricultural practice. In 1882 he got a job as a research assistant at the Agricultural Institute of the University of Leipzig. In 1884 he completed his habilitation with a paper on the value determination of grain on the basis of a new rating system. He then taught at the University of Leipzig for twelve years, initially as a private lecturer, and from 1886 as an associate professor. From 1896 until his relatively early death he was a full professor and director of the Agricultural Institute at the University of Jena .

Settegast mainly worked in the field of crop production. He was particularly interested in the cultivation methods of agricultural crops . After the death of Adolph Blomeyer in 1891, he completed and published the second volume of his book " The Culture of Agricultural Useful Plants ". His handbook on agricultural seeds , published in 1892, found high recognition in the professional world . Several of his numerous lectures have appeared as independent publications. Special mention should be made of a publication from 1894 on " Combating water shortages through correct soil cultivation ". Settegast was very committed as an agricultural educator. Bringing the knowledge of science to the farmers was a matter close to his heart. Since 1897, together with other specialist colleagues, he has published a series of publications entitled "The teaching of agriculture. Methodical course for the technical training of practical farmers".
