Qualifications and participants
Initially, the Asian Association decided that the four semi-finalists from 2006 (China, North Korea, Australia and Japan) as well as host Malaysia would automatically qualify for the finals. After Malaysia's rejection, South Korea, the best group third of 2006, moved up.
14 teams applied for the remaining three places in the final round. These were initially reduced to nine through a pre-qualification (in October 2006). In the main qualification, the remaining teams were then divided into two groups. In group A five teams played for two final places while in group B with four teams only the group winners qualified. Thailand, Myanmar (Group A) and Taiwan (Group B) prevailed in the qualification. The qualifying rounds were held in November 2006.
