The Atomic Energy Commission ( AEC , German Atomic Energy Commission ) of the United States was in 1946 founded and was until 1974 the central authority for the research and development of the utilization of atomic energy (mainly in terms of nuclear weapons ). In 1975 the authority was dissolved. Her duties were transferred to the United States Department of Energy from 1977 .
