history

The history of the UFA Sports brand goes back to 1988. At that time, UFA Film- und Fernseh GmbH , a subsidiary of Bertelsmann , signed the first private television contract with the Bundesliga in Hamburg under the direction of Bernd Schiphorst and acquired the television rights for the legendary Wimbledon tennis tournament . Both of these were downright revolutionary at the time. The business field of sports rights marketing developed under the UFA Sports brand. In 1994, UFA Sports GmbH successfully invested in the renovation of Hertha BSC and thus laid the foundation for the first overall marketing of a Bundesliga club. In 2000 the company was transferred to the RTL Group, which was newly created from the company CLT-UFA, and was renamed Sportfive in 2001 after merging with the two French sports rights agencies Sport + and GJCD (Groupe Jean-Claude Darmon) . RTL Group sold the remaining 25 percent stake in November 2006 to the French media conglomerate Lagardère . Since then, Sportfive has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lagardère Sports division. In April 2008, UFA Sports GmbH was re-established in Hamburg by the RTL Group and former Sportfive managers. In May 2015, Lagardère Unlimited, the sports and entertainment division of the French media group Lagardère, also acquired this agency. In this context, a 2-brand strategy was adopted in which both agencies continue to act individually and independently on the market and consistently stand up for the respective goals and needs of their rights holders and sponsors. The UFA Sports brand was transformed into the U! Sports renamed.
