UIC cable
The UIC cable is the term used to describe the cable that is usually coupled within the intercar connections of passenger trains and is used for data transmission .
Standard UIC 568
The 13-core cable with plug according to UIC 568 is a connection cable standardized by the UIC , with which data and switching commands are exchanged between the locomotive and the passenger cars of a train . These are, for example, announcements, control of the train destination display or the door control .
Locomotives that comply with the standard usually have two sockets on each end , and the cables are routed from car to car.
Further development of UIC 558
Attempts have been made to use this cable for a complete communication bus ( Train Communication Network , TCN), but it has been shown that for the sake of downward compatibility when used with non-converted cars, an 18-pin cable is preferable. This led to the development of the UIC 558 cable. The additional contacts 14 and 15 are used by various railway companies for the side-selective door control and the contacts 17 and 18 as Wire Train Bus (WTB) of the TCN. The cores number 17 and 18 must be designed as a twisted pair with a shield. A 13-pin plug can be connected to an 18-pin socket and transmits the signals of the 13-pin version.
