United Nations Mission to Support the Hudaydah Agreement (UNMHA) is a UN mission to stabilize and build a government in Yemen that represents all political and religious groups in the country.

history

The political situation in Yemen has been confusing since 2011. The UN and the Gulf Cooperation Council want to improve the political situation in the country in this difficult situation. To this end, an agreement was signed between the government and the Gulf Cooperation Council in Riyadh in December 2011 . In 2012, a United Nation Liaison Office was established in Yemen. Conflicts within the government, the country's tribes, especially the Houthis, are hindering this process. The UN Secretary General provides the Security Council with regular reports on progress. These escalated into a civil war in Yemen between the Houthis and the government in mid-2014 . Regardless of the efforts, the inter-ethnic struggles in that one continue. The Houthis conquered large parts of the country. Attempts at mediation by the UN and other states have made no progress. Differences of opinion, rivalries within the government and other groups escalated in mid-2014. Further mediation attempts by the UN until mid-2015 were lacking. They took control of most of Yemen by September 2014 and the months that followed. The President Abed Rabbo Mansur Hadi asked for help from Saudi Arabia , which invaded Yemen on March 26, 2015 with the support of other states. In resolution 2216 (2015), the UN Security Council tried to bring about a solution to the conflict. Further rounds of talks followed until June 2016 and ended with no result. In the meantime, fighting continued in the country. On December 13, 2018, the Houthis and the government reached an agreement to open the port of the city of al-Hudaida for international aid to the country and an exchange of prisoners. Resolution 2481 (2019) extended the mission to January 15, 2020.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed was appointed to head the mission . He worked from April 2015 to February 2018. He was succeeded Martin Griffiths in February 2018 the UK at. 75 UN observers and other personnel were dispatched to the region to monitor the situation. With resolution 2541 (2018) of the UN Security Council, a six-month ceasefire in al-Hudahda governorate , withdrawal of troops from al-Hudahida and cooperation with local forces to restore order was agreed.
