Martin Griffiths (born July 3, 1951 ) is a British professional diplomat who has been the United Nations Special Representative for Yemen since February 16, 2018 .

He studied philosophy , religion , oriental studies , African studies and law . He holds a Bachelor's degree from the School of African and Asian Studies at the University of Sussex and a Masters from SOAS University of London . He is a lawyer at Lincoln's Inn (UK), Oregon State Bar , and Federal Bar (USA).

From 1994 he was again employed at the United Nations as Director for UN humanitarian affairs in Geneva. Later, his places of employment were: New York City , the Great Lakes region and finally in the Balkans, where he co-founded the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo . From December 23, 1996 to March 14, 1997 he was Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Great Lakes Region and Director of Humanitarian Affairs at the United Nations Office in Geneva . From 1998 to 1999 he was Deputy UN Emergency Aid Coordinator , Sérgio Vieira de Mello, at UN Headquarters in New York City .

From 1999 to 2010 he was the founding director of the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva . Under Griffith's leadership, the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue broke new ground in peace mediation. In Indonesia, Griffiths achieved what was seen as an impossible task in the mediation industry. Like some governments that fight a conflict with armed insurgents, the Indonesians have always refused to allow outsiders to interfere in what they believed to be a domestic matter. In addition, she did not want the rebels to receive international recognition through high-quality mediation. From 2012 to 2014 he was advisor to the United Nations and Arab League's special envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi . From 2016 through September 2018, Griffiths was the first Executive Director of the European Institute of Peace .

On February 16, 2018 he was named "United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen" by António Guterres .
