Hans Günther Natke (born May 9, 1933 in Elbing ; † August 28, 2002 in Hanover ) was a German scientist, initially in the aircraft industry, later as professor for dynamics , vibration and measurement technology at the Curt-Risch Institute of the University of Hanover . He worked in particular on system theory , the parameter identification of dynamic systems and error-controlled, test-based model adaptations.

Career

Natke was born on May 9, 1933 in Elbing in Prussia. In 1945 the family fled first to Neustadt in West Prussia and from there to Schwerin in Mecklenburg, where his father was supposed to relocate the Elbingen city administration as city administrator. Until 1951 Natke attended the unified high school at Pfaffenteich in Schwerin and then fled with his parents to Braunschweig, where he obtained the university entrance qualification in 1952. Having moved to Hanover with his parents in the meantime, he began studying mathematics and physics there in the 1953 summer semester, but then switched to mathematics because the internships in chemistry and physics did not appeal to him.

After the diploma exam in 1958, he first worked for a year at the Office for Soil Research in Hanover and in January 1959 began an activity that lasted until April 1976 and continued to shape his life at Weser-Flugzeugbau GmbH in Bremen- Lemwerder , namely in the under construction vibration and stability group located within the test department. In 1968 he became the main department head for vibration technology in the restructured plant, which was now called Vereinigte Flugtechnische Werke - Fokker GmbH (VFW).

After teaching assignments for the lecture " Aeroelastics " at the Technical University of Berlin in the summer semesters 1970 and 1971 at the instigation of Gienke, Natke completed his habilitation there in 1971 with the text "The calculation of the natural vibration quantities of a damped system from the results of a vibration test in an exciter configuration" . After disagreements with the VFW Bremen, Natke tried to get a university professorship and was successful in Hanover. On May 1, 1976, he became a full professor at the chair for vibration and measurement science and director of the Curt Risch Institute in the field of civil engineering and surveying .

Scientific work

Natke was responsible for the experimental and theoretical-numerical dynamic structure analysis of the following new designs:

In 1982 his important monograph “Introduction to Theory and Practice of Time Series and Modal Analysis” was published. Here, the measurement technology and the parameter identification of vibrating mechanical systems including the error-controlled correction of the series models are treated in depth and in an application-oriented manner. In 1990 Natke and his partner JTP Yao received one of the first Max Planck Research Awards from the Alexander von Humboldt Society and the Max Planck Society , endowed with DM 100,000.

He worked with Yao on questions of material, structural and load-related uncertainties in relation to system identification, including the development of damage that can lead to failure. With Czeslaw Cempel from the Polytechnic University in Poznan, he shared an interest in damage diagnostics and the reliability of complex constructions from various perspectives. With him he held workshops and in 1997 jointly published the monograph “Model-Aided Diagnosis of Mechanical Systems”. This includes knowledge-based decision-making methods for monitoring, model-based diagnosis and assessing the reliability of complex designs. With Yakov Ben-Haim from Haifa , a Humboldt fellow, he was connected to integrated experimental-mathematical methods for recording and evaluating the uncertainties of constructions from the point of view of reliability. Mention should be made of an international workshop in Lambrecht in 1996, the proceedings of which were published in book form by both organizers under the title "Uncertainty: Models and Measures".

Natke organized periodic conferences on the subjects of "Dynamic Problems - Modeling and Reality", sometimes together with specialist colleagues. Natke published works with other foreign scientists, gave lectures - especially in China - by invitation and advised colleagues on research projects there.

Natke's scientific life's work with 6 monographs and around 200 publications in journals and conference proceedings, his workshops and courses for science and practice, and also his expert reports for complicated interpretations and damage cases as director of the Curt Risch Institute allowed him to work in the 1980s and 1990s most significant structural systems analysts in Germany and maturing into one of the leading in the world. This resulted in many high honors such as honorary doctorates from the Polytechnic University of Poznan, Poland, and the Technical University “Gh. Asachi ”in Iasi, Romania, the consulting professorship at Xi`an Jiaotong University in China, as well as 4 other research awards and honorary memberships in scientific societies.

Others

Natke was married to Brigitte Natke (née Holk, * 1934) and had four children. Flying became a hobby in the 1990s, first with single-engine and then with twin-engine machines, mainly in Germany and the USA.

Shortly before his death, he also finished his last book "Autobiographical Fragments", which was published posthumously in 2002 by Unser Verlag, Hanover.
