The USS Allen M. Sumner (DD-692) was the lead ship of her class of destroyers . It was named after Allen Melancthon Sumner , a captain in the United States Marine Corps . On January 26, 1944, the ship was put into service in the New York Navy Yard , her first in command was Norman J. Sampson.

history

The Allen M. Sumner went to its entry into first on a series of training missions near Bermuda , until 12 August 1944 went to extend over the Panama Canal toward Pearl Harbor . On October 23, she joined the Fast Carrier Task Force , the main US force in the Pacific, where she stayed during World War II. Among other things, she took part in the Battle of Luzon .

In the period before the Korean War , Allen M. Sumner was involved in several missions, including Operation Crossroads , the major nuclear test on Bikini Atoll .

During the Korean War, Allen M. Sumner was part of numerous missions in Korea. Later, in July 1956, the destroyer helped evacuate American civilians from Egypt because of the Suez Crisis . In January 1962 the Sumner was involved in the sea blockade around Cuba.

On February 7, 1967, the Allen M. Sumner was commanded to Vietnam . It acted as protection for the Long Beach , a guided missile cruiser. Later she took part in coastal bombing. She was involved in the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of NATO .

Awards

The Allen M. Sumner received two Service Stars for their service in World War II  - one for the Korean War, and two for the Vietnam War.
