history

The Coco motorboat was built in 1917 as a civilian motorboat by the Albany Boat Corporation in Watervliet , New York . The US Navy acquired Coco by its owner, WJ Matheson in Coconut Grove , Florida , on June 23, 1917 for use as a patrol boat during the First World War . She entered service as the USS Coco (SP-110) on July 23, 1917 (according to the entry in the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships , she was not officially put into service, other sources indicate). The boat was assigned to the 7th Naval District and was used accordingly in the waters of Florida for the remainder of the war and a few months beyond.

On June 23, 1919, Coco was removed from the Naval Vessel Register and on August 5 of that year the boat was sold. Before it could be handed over to the new owner, however, it was sunk along with several other patrol boats during the Florida Keys Hurricane September 9-10 of that year while it was anchored in the North Beach Basin in Key West , Florida.
