Watervliet is a city with the status " City " in Albany County in the US state of New York with 10,233 inhabitants (2014).
geography
The city is bounded to the north by New York State Route 7 and to the east by the Hudson River . The Interstate 787 tangential to the place in the East. Albany is 12 kilometers south . The Albany International Airport is situated at a distance of eight kilometers to the west.
history
Dutch settlers settled in the area in 1643. In 1710 a ferry service over the Hudson River to Troy on the east bank was put into operation and the place was called "West Troy". The ferry was also used to transport troops during the American Revolutionary War en route to the Battle of Saratoga in 1777 . In 1786 a second ferry connection was put into operation. In 1896 the "City of Watervliet" was founded. The name is derived from Dutch and means "water stream". At the beginning of the 19th century , several bell foundries started operating and the manufacture of bells became an important industry. From 1813, the construction of weapons and their storage in an arsenal was an important industry in the city. The city still calls itself "Arsenal City" today. The Watervliet Arsenal was open to the general public as a museum until 2015 and is to be reopened at a later date.
There are several historically valuable churches, buildings and squares in the Watervliet cityscape, including: Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church , Ohio Street Methodist Episcopal Church Complex , St. Brigid Church , St. Patrick's Church (demolished in 2013) and Watervliet Side Cut Locks .
