The USS Dahlgren (DLG-12 / DDG-43) was a destroyer in the United States Navy and belonged to the Farragut class .

history

The Dahlgren was commissioned in 1956 and laid down in 1958 at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard . The launch took place in 1960, the commissioning in the following year. The ship is named after the Admiral John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren . At the time of commissioning, the ship was designated as DLG-12 , i.e. as a destroyer leader with guided weapons .

On her first voyage, the Dahlgren visited several European countries, including the destroyer in Kiel and several Scandinavian ports. In 1962, Dahlgren was involved in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The ship was later removed from the Atlantic fleet and served as a Combat Search and Rescue unit in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War . In 1967 alone she rescued eleven shot down pilots from the sea.

In the following years, the Dahlgren sailed again in the Atlantic, sometimes as a flagship for regional commanders. 1972 and 1973 spent the ship for overhaul and modernization in their shipyard. This was also followed by maneuvers and trips in European waters, and in 1977 the team visited Bremen . The destroyer leader had already been reclassified as a guided missile destroyer in 1975 and now bore the code DDG-43 . 1979 began the next shipyard layover, which lasted 15 months and took place again in Philadelphia. August 1980 began the next mission to the Mediterranean. In 1981 Dahlgren took part in the UNITAS exercise in the Caribbean. In 1984 the ship was again in her yard for overhaul, followed by a mission to the Mediterranean in 1986, and then to the Indian Ocean in 1988.

In 1992 the Dahlgren was decommissioned and scrapped the following year.
