history

The Luce was laid on October 1, 1957 as the second unit of the Farragut class in the shipyard of Bethlehem Steel in Quincy and was launched on December 11, 1958. The commissioning of the ship took place on May 20, 1961 under the command of Commander David H. Bagley. It was named after Admiral Stephen B. Luce (1827-1917), who founded the Naval War College in 1884 .

After test drives, the Luce was part of the United States Sixth Fleet in April 1962 , before becoming the flagship of Commander Destroyer Division 84 in May . In August of the same year, the ship returned to the Sixth Fleet and took part in NATO maneuvers with British and French units . These were completed by March 1963. The destroyer spent the following time with training missions in the Atlantic and the training of crew members.

In February 1964, the Luce was ordered to the coast of Cyprus to evacuate American citizens in an emergency. It also served as accommodation for the then United States Secretary of the Navy , Paul Nitze . In May 1964, the ship returned to her home port in Florida as escort of the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La (CV-38) .

In April 1965 the Luce was transferred to the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base to be used from there until May as a patrol off the coast of the Dominican Republic . She then took part in maneuvers in the Mediterranean and together with the destroyer USS Corry (DD-817) in the Black Sea.

On January 19, 1966, an accident occurred aboard the ship at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, when the warhead of a RIM-2 Terrier detached and hit the water about eight feet from the destroyer. There were no injuries, the ship was undamaged.

The Luce remained in active service for almost 30 years until April 1, 1991 and was then transferred to the reserve fleet . The deletion from the Naval Vessel Register took place on November 20, 1992. In June 2005, after 14 years of layover, the ship went to Metro Machine in Philadelphia for scrapping .
