European protected area Gsieg - Obere Mähder
The European protection area Gsieg - Obere Mähder ( Natura 2000 areas ) is located in the municipality of Lustenau in Vorarlberg , Austria . It includes individual small groups of trees and an extensive raised bog .
The purpose of the European protected area Gsieg - Obere Mähder is the protection of endangered wild native plant and animal species and their natural habitats as well as the preservation of the centuries-old cultivated land.
Legal basis
The European protection area Gsieg - Obere Mähder was designated as such in 1998 with a simple state law in accordance with the Vorarlberg Nature Conservation Ordinance. The basis for the protection status in 2003 was the Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive 92/43 / EEC (Habitats Directive) of the European Union . The original ordinance has been amended several times and the duration of protection has been extended over and over again in recent years. In the end only by one year at a time.
topography
The European protected area Gsieg - Obere Mähder has existed as a nature reserve since 1989 and is divided into two parts ( Gsieg and Obere Mähder ). It is located on the southern edge of the municipal area of Lustenau and has a total area of 73.13 hectares. The sub-areas are separated from each other by about 280 meters as the crow flies and have no direct connection. Several high-voltage lines run across both areas .
The names of the two protected areas are each derived from the parcels of the same name.
44% of the protected area is owned by the two Swiss municipalities of Widnau and Schmitter . The market town of Lustenau has a 23% ownership share in the protected area.
Gsieg sub-area
The almost rectangular sub-area Gsieg borders directly to the east on the municipality of Dornbirn . The area is bordered to the south by Schweizerstrasse. To the west, the Rhine Valley Inland Canal separates the area from other parcels. The busy Schmitternstraße (L 45, also: Schweizerstraße ) runs right through the European protected area. There is a model airfield in the protected area, which can be operated all year round. Protected litter meadow areas are adjacent to this sub-area.
The area has only a slight slope and is at an altitude of about 407 m above sea level. A. up to 410 m above sea level A. with an area of around 43.62 hectares (around 60% of the total protected area).
Obere Mähder sub-area
The sub-area Obere Mähder borders on the municipality of Hohenems to the south . To the east, the Rheintaler inland canal separates the area from other parcels. To the north, the European protected area is partially bounded by the busy Schmitternstraße (L 45, also: Schweizerstraße ) and the Rheinstraße (L 203) also runs right through the European protected area . The Rhine Valley Motorway is also adjacent to the southeast .
The area has only a slight gradient and is at an altitude of about 406 m above sea level. A. up to 410 m above sea level A. with an area of around 29.51 hectares (around 40% of the total protected area).
Purpose and scope of protection
In terms of the Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive (Annexes I and II of the Habitats Directive), the following features are relevant and protected for this protected area:
- Transitional and swinging turf bogs,
- calcareous fens,
- Lean lowland hay meadows,
- Rivers of the planar to montane level with vegetation of the Ranunculion fluitantis / Callitricho batrachion,
- Pipe grass meadows on calcareous soil, peaty and clayey-silty soils ( wet meadow - Molinion caeruleae),
- Yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata)
- Alpine crested newt (Triturus cristatus)
- Dark blue anthill (Maculinea nausithous)
- Great blue bog (Maculinea teleius)
- Scabiosa butterfly (Euphydryas aurinia)
- Helmet Azure Maiden (Coenagrion mercuriale)
- Narrow diaper snail (Vertigo angustior)
- Glossy peat herb (Liparis loeselii)
The occurrence of around a third of all orchids in Vorarlberg and over 500 species of butterflies has been proven in the protected area, of which, however, every fifth species is considered endangered. Other animal and plant occurrences are z. B .: corncrake (Crex crex), Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra), Large Slanted head grasshopper (Ruspolia nitidula), Curlew (Numenius arquata), Western Clubtail (Gomphus pulchellus), Siberian iris (Iris sibirica), fragrance and leek (Allium suaveolens) , Sumpf-Siegwurz / Sumpf-Gladiole (Gladiolus palustris) or colored pondweed (Potamogeton coloratus). In addition, 49 mosses were found in the litter meadows, eight of which are considered threatened.

The European protected area Gsieg - Obere Mähder is hardly used for tourism. The protected area is still used for agriculture .
