The USS Drum (SS-228) was a submarine of the United States Navy . It was built in the US Navy Yard Portsmouth, New Hampshire , named after a large grouper that was found off the North Atlantic coast. The USS Drum served in World War IIand completed 13 war missions, each lasting about two months. According to official information, she sank 15 Japanese ships; the crew complained 27.
