The USS Mesa Verde (LPD-19) is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock of the United States Navy . She is the first ship in the US Navy to be named after Mesa Verde National Park .

history

The construction contract was awarded to Ingalls Shipbuilding by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in Pascagoula, Mississippi , on February 29, 2000 ; the keel was laid on February 25, 2003. When launched on November 19, 2004, Linda Price was baptized Campbell, wife of the former US -Senators of Colorado , Ben Nighthorse Campbell , the ship. Around three years later, on December 15, 2007, the Mesa Verde was officially put into service and Comdr is the first in command. Shawn Lobree.

In August 2008, the Shock Trials , which a ship of each new class goes through, were carried out at Mesa Verde . An explosive device detonates underwater near the ship, but it is not allowed to seriously damage the ship. In April 2009 the Mesa Verde took part in the exercise UNITAS , in September in the exercise PANAMAX . In early 2010, the ship was scheduled to move to the Persian Gulf as part of the combat group around the USS Nassau (LHA-4) . After the severe earthquake in Haiti , however, the group was briefly ordered off the coast of the affected region to provide help for the people affected. In March 2011, the Mesa Verde was part of the combat group surrounding the USS Bataan (LHD-5) , which was relocated to the Mediterranean Sea as part of Operation Odyssey Dawn .
