The USS New York (LPD-21) is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock of the United States Navy .
history
Shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the US , Governor George Pataki wrote a letter to then Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England asking for a surface warship that will be used in the war on terror to be brought to the US - Name New York State . This request was granted on August 28, 2002 , although at the time only missile submarines were named after states.
The contract was awarded to Northrop Grumman Ship Systems . The shipyard Avondale Shipyard used 6.8 tons of steel (7½ short tons ), which came from the rubble of the World Trade Center , in the forward stem of the ship .
The New York was launched on December 19, 2007 and was christened on March 1, 2008. Godmother was Mrs. Dotty England, the wife of the US Secretary of Defense Gordon England. The Navy accepted New York on August 21, and the ship entered service in New York City on November 7, 2009 . Her home port was initially Naval Station Norfolk and has been Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville since December 2013 .
