The USS Anchorage (LPD-23) is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock of the United States Navy . It was named after the city of Anchorage , Alaska .
history
LPD-23 was commissioned in 2006 as the seventh ship of its class. The construction contract went to the Northrop Grumman concern , which had the ship built in its Avondale Shipyard . The ship was laid down on September 24, 2007. After around three and a half years in dry dock, LPD-23 was launched on February 12, 2011. The christening in the name Anchorage took place on May 11, 2011, godmother was Annette Conway, wife of the former Commandant of the Marine Corps , General James T. Conway .
The Anchorage was handed over to the US Navy in September 2012 and entered service on May 4, 2013.
