The USS Arlington (LPD-24) is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock of the United States Navy . It was named after Arlington County , Virginia , where the Pentagon is located . This was done to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the building.

history

LPD-24 was commissioned in 2006 and laid down in late 2008. The building yard was Ingalls Shipbuilding . The Arlington was the third of eight ships at the time that Avondale Shipyards had handed over to Ingalls in order not to fall further behind schedule - as was the case with the other ships of the San Antonio class due to various design problems . Both shipyards are owned by Northrop Grumman .

Ingalls launched the Arlington after two years of construction. The ship was christened on March 26, 2011, godmother was Joyce Rumsfeld, the wife of former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld . The US Navy removed the ship in December 2012 and put it into service on April 6, 2013 in Norfolk, Virginia . Its service life is calculated at 40 years. The first in command was Commander Darren W. Nelson, who was involved in transporting troops back from Operation Enduring Freedom .
