The USS San Diego (LPD-22) is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock of the United States Navy . It was named after the city of San Diego , California .
history
LPD-22 was commissioned in 2006 as the sixth ship in its class. The construction contract went to the Northrop Grumman concern , which had the ship built in its Ingalls Shipbuilding yard . The San Diego was laid down on May 23, 2007. This made her the first ship of the class to be keeled after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina , which hit the Northrop Grumman shipyards on the Gulf Coast. After almost three years, on May 7, 2010, the ship was launched. The christening took place on June 12, 2010, godmother was Linda Winter, the wife of the former United States Secretary of the Navy , Donald C. Winter .
On October 1, 2011 it was announced that all weapons, propulsion and other tests had been successfully completed, and in December the San Diego was handed over to the Navy. In March 2012, the ship left the shipyard for San Diego, where it was put into service on May 19, 2012.
