history

The Stonewall Jackson was commissioned from Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1961 and laid down there in 1962. The launch took place after about one and a half years, in August 1964 the boat was finally put into service with the United States Navy .

This was followed by the first training runs, culminating in the first launch of an ICBM on December 2nd. The submarine was stationed in Apra Harbor , Guam , from where it sailed for the first five years. In 1970 he was assigned to the Atlantic fleet . In the same year an overhaul was carried out in the Electric Boat shipyard . The Stonewall was then stationed in Holy Loch , Scotland until 1978 . A second overhaul followed by 1980, this time in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard . From 1982 the boat finally operated from the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay .

On February 9, 1995, the Stonewall Jackson was decommissioned and canceled in the same year in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as part of the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program .
