The USS Tusk (SS-426) is a conventionally powered submarine of the United States Navy of Balao-class submarine .
Building history
The boat was ordered on June 6, 1942 and on August 23, 1943 the keel was laid at William Cramp and Sons in Philadelphia . The launch took place on July 8, 1945. The boat entered service on April 11, 1946 as the USS Tusk (SS-426) .
In 1947 the boat had to be returned to the shipyard with severe damage and was converted into the so-called guppy class and extensively modernized as part of the Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program .
Sinking of the USS Cochino (SS-345)
On August 25, 1949 , an explosion occurred in the battery room on board the USS Cochino , a sister ship of the USS Tusk, due to heavy seas. Both boats tried for 14 hours to get the resulting fire under control. On August 26, 1949, another explosion occurred and the USS Cochino had to be abandoned. The crew members were picked up from the USS Tusk. The accident killed a civilian technician from the Bureau of Ships and six Tusk sailors. All victims were washed into the sea by high waves. The USS Cochino suffered no losses.
Collision with the hospital ship Consolation (AH-15)
In February 1947, the USS Tusk collided with the hospital ship USS Consolation (AH-15) during a maneuver off the African coast . Due to the severe damage to the tower of the boat, it was no longer submersible and had to make the journey home to Philadelphia over water.
Whereabouts
The boat was decommissioned on October 18, 1973 and handed over to the Navy of the Republic of China . There the boat was taken into service as Hai Pao (S-792). The boat is officially still in service and has been laid up in the port of Kaohsiung Naval Base since November 2015.
