Uday Kotak

Uday Kotak (born March 15, 1959 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) is an Indian billionaire, banker and vice chairman and managing director of Kotak Mahindra Bank .

Forbes estimated his fortune in 2019 to 11.8 billion US dollars , making it one of the richest Indians.

Life

Kotak grew up in an extended upper middle class family in Mumbai. He lived with 60 other family members in a household who shared a common kitchen under one roof. The family originally came from Gujarat and was involved in the cotton trade.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Sydenham College and completed his post-graduate degree in management from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in 1982 . He also studied at the University of Mumbai .

After completing his MBA , Kotak founded Kotak Capital Management Finance Ltd (later Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd). He turned the company, with start-up capital of less than $ 80,000 borrowed from family members and friends, into a financial services conglomerate with assets of $ 19 billion (as of March 2014) and the fourth largest private bank in India by market capitalization over 600 branches. In 2014 the bank took over the India business of the Dutch ING Group .

In 2015, Kotak entered the general insurance business, working with Bharti Airtel and telecom magnate Sunil Mittal to start a small payment bank.

Personal

He is married to Pallavi Kotak , has two children and lives in Mumbai.

Kotak is a member of the Government of India's High Level Infrastructure Funding Committee, the Primary Market Advisory Committee of the Securities & Exchange Board of India, and a member of the Board of Governors of the National Institute of Securities Markets.
