Udo Dammert (born May 18, 1904 in Baden-Baden ; † May 20, 2003 in Simmerberg ) was a German classical pianist , piano teacher, author and art collector .

After childhood in Baden-Baden, Udo Dammert attended the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich and then studied music with Herbert von Karajan at the Mozarteum in Salzburg . In 1925 he became a student of the pianist Josef Pembaur at the Academy of Music in Munich . From Munich he went on concert tours through Europe.

In the traditionally oriented Munich music scene, the young committed pianist Udo Dammert appeared in March 1927 together with his colleague Franz Dorfmüller (1887–1974) and the composer Fritz Büchtger (1903–1978) as a co-founder of the association for contemporary music , which after their The aim of the statutes was to “perform the works of living composers without any party or national ties”. Under the direction of Büchtger and with the conductor Hermann Scherchen (1891–1966), who later joined the group as spiritual leader , this institution performed a large number of individual concerts and in particular four festival weeks for new music until the end of 1932 .

At his residence in Munich, Dammert set up his own recording studio in which he taught students. With Hedwig Rischner he married a student who was the doctor's daughter and heir to the two personalities of the Simmerberg local history, Bonaventura and Maria König. In this way Dammert came to Simmerberg in 1936 and continued his concert activities from there (approx. 2000 in total).

Art collector

After his successful pianist career, Udo Dammert worked as an art collector. The icon images in reverse glass , which he had collected over the years, grew into a collection that is unique in Europe and which he later bequeathed to a foundation. They can be seen today in the “Behind Glass Collections of Udo and Hedi Dammert” section in the Murnau Castle Museum . In addition to stained glass, Dammert was also enthusiastic about the art of Asia and brought home mainly religious art objects from there. As a consultant for the Munich Völkerkundemuseum , he passed on his knowledge of folk art and made pieces from his collection available as exhibits to large, international exhibitions.

The ecumenical idea of ​​the peaceful coexistence of the faiths of this world was of great importance for Dammert. He maintained friendly contact with artists such as Wassily Kandinsky , Paul Klee , Béla Bartók and Pablo Picasso . Udo Dammert died two days after his 99th birthday and was buried in Munich.
